Script install Capita Sims.net

One of the more time-consuming installs i face working at the school is when I need to do a sims.net install.

First off make sure you can see file extensions at the end of file names. eg, connect.ini

If you don’t follow the below guide

************ SHOW FILE EXTENSIONS ***********

  1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, click Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

  2. Click the View tab, then under Advanced settings.

  • Un-tick the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK

********************************************

Install.bat

First off make a new folder some place accessible either by SCCM or a shared applications drive and call it sims.

Inside the folder make a new text file and call it install, now you will need to change the .txt to .bat

It will prompt the change, click Yes.

extention
Change install.txt to install.bat

Now go to or remote to a sims workstation and take a copy of the connect.ini and sims.ini and place into the new sims folder.

  • You will find connect.ini under your sims program files folder. (C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net\connect.ini)
  • The sims.ini is located inside the windows folder. (C:\Windows\sims.ini)

Now you should have three files inside the sims folder, connect.ini sims.ini and install.bat.

Now open the install.bat with notepad or preferably notepad++ and copy the code below into it.

@echo off
\\vulcan\shared$\sims\Setups\simsinfrastructuresetup.exe -a {QuietMode} {SIMSWorkstation}
\\vulcan\shared$\sims\Setups\simsapplicationSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} [SIMSDirectory=”S:\SIMS” [SIMSDotNetDirectory]=”C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net”
\\vulcan\shared$\sims\Setups\simsmanualSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} [SIMSDirectory]=”S:\SIMS” [SIMSDotNetDirectory]=”C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net”
\\vulcan\shared$\sims\Setups\simsamparkSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} [SIMSDirectory]=”S:\SIMS” [SIMSDotNetDirectory]=”C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net”
XCopy \\kraken\Applications\Sims\connect.ini “C:\Program Files\SIMS\Sims .net” /y
XCopy \\kraken\Applications\Sims\SIMS.ini “C:\Windows” /y

Now you will need to now alter the code to suit your environment.

  • First, you will need to alter lines 3,4,5 and 6 to match your network location of the .exe files. (The $ simply means it’s a hidden share)
  • You may need to change the [SIMSDirectory= location to suit your network. Simply change the network drive letter… to map to your sims directory.
  • Next, You will need to change the XCopy location. My network applications are held on a server called Kraken in a share called Applications. simply change this to suit your network.

And that’s it! run the batch file on a test computer to make sure it’s working then next time you need to install sims you only need to run one file and have 0 configuration.

TIP: For testing, try removing the @echo off you will be able to see at what point the command is up to.

  • Echo off turns off displaying lines of code until the end of the script or an echo on command is called.
